Garage sales

Would someone please explain to me why it is important to regulate garage sales? A new regulation up for vote of the council would limit people's freedom to post garage sale signs and it would confine garage sales to only certain months of the year. Does Murrieta REALLY need more regulation of garage sales? It would seem like the City Government and the CofC is so worried about Murrieta's image that pretty soon this place will be so squeaky clean and wholesome that real people won't be able to live here.

If Murrieta is going to write tickets for posting garage sale signs, then political and real estate signage must also be subject to citation. Whats fair is fair. And in case anyone didn't notice, the weather is very dry and sunny here, so why would garage sales be limited to certain months? If you have a perpetual garage sale like the one on Ivy between Washington and Jefferson, you have tha ability to cite for urban blight, so why do you need another regulation?

I would like to suggest that revenues from citations be earmarked for charity, so that the City couldn't be accused of creating new regulations and writing tickets solely for the benefit of the City's coffers.

  • JLK,
I agree. There are no perfect months for a garage sale and if I'm limited to when I have one or what time of the day I can hang a sign, it better be that politicians in this town can post their signs in the same fashion. What are they going to do, have the garage sale police out on Saturday checking what month it is. We have much bigger fish to fry then that. I do think that garage sale signs should come down at the end of the day of a sale however. In this way that would protect the sale signs that remain for weeks in some areas.

  • I didn’t think you could post signs for garage sales at anytime on public property in this city anyway and unless you actually catch someone putting one up you can’t ticket them. My guess is that it’s easier to stop the signs being put up throughout the city by limiting the number of days, that way no matter who puts up the sign you can go directly to the homeowner and nail them.

Also the city council at one time did try regulating political signage to so many months before an election, but it couldn’t be done legally. I do agree with you if you limit garage sale signs then realtors should have to follow the same rules.

My best guess is this had more to do with complaints to the city than adding money to the city coffers because the dollar numbers would be very small.

  • Don,t Murrieta officials have anything more important to do than "mull over garage sale restrictions". PLEASE! So signs are up Friday thru Sunday. Political, real estate and open house signs are up for months on end, and not just one per corner! I've counted as many as 20 with the same name on one corner. They are on fences, posts, stuck in dirt grass, everywhere, everytime something is up for voting! Why should their regulations be any different?!!! Why should real estate for sale signs be posted for months in front of a house? Because they need to sell something, same as someone having a garage sale! My daughter works hard to support her 3 children, and as many of us has a hard time making ends meet. She buys all the family clothes at yard sales and many other things she could not afford otherwise. Garage sales allow her to purchase necessities without seeking public assistance! When her kitchen faucet broke, she was able to replace it thru a yard sale. A plumbing flood caused damage and mold. She replaced flooring and paint she bought at a yard sale. She is also facing back surgery and is learning EBAY so she can afford time off for surgery. If sales were regulated to certain days, what about rain on those days? What if someone is sick and can't go? Do they just miss out for 2 months? How about the kid's that won't get Christmas presents because their parent's can afford them otherwise? How about when someones kid's are sick and they need to have a sale to make up lost wages that week? What about the people that redecorate and sell couches, etc. That furniture isn't always worth listing in the Pennysaver. Will people just start dumping more stuff in rural areas because of gas prices and dump fees? Who will clean it up? One man's trash is another man's treasure!!! I know seniors that shop yard sales out of necessity because they are on limited incomes, and others that go for fun to occupy their time. Don't take that away from them!!! As for the article in the Californian, there is never "hundreds of cars " at a sale. There might be a hundred spread around all of Murrieta. So make sure they park legally. There are already rules for that. Make people put an address on the back of their signs and give out tickets for ones left Monday A.M. or on the sale day for no address. Limit households to 4 or 5 sales a year, which is average anyway, but don't restrict their days. People have situations! Especially those of us that can't afford to shop the mall or even for the basics. Murrieta garage salers-SPEAK UP. Go to council meetings, tell your stories here, something!!! C'MON HOW CAN YOU RESTRICT THE GREAT AMERCAN PAST-TIME! What's next?!

  • Anon 1:53,

No needs to circle the wagons, so to say, the city council rejected the proposal.

  • Honestly! When I read the proposed action in the paper I couldn't believe it! I thought I was going to have to curtail my "garage sale, fortune telling" sessions. Whew! Somebody get the council something to do to earn the pay raise they are sure to approve themselves.

  • Jenny your store looks interesting. I would like to take my wife there to check it out. Is it in the Ralphs or Albertsons shopping center?

  • Would love to meet you both. My shop in the Ralph's center across from M & M Videos, near Washington Mutual. Don't forget to bring a couple of cans of food :-) for the Katrina drive.
